L’industria casearia americana torna all’attacco dei formaggi DOP europei. In una lettera indirizzata al segretario di stato per l’agricoltura, Tom Vilsack, e al rappresentante del governo Usa per il commercio, Michael Froman, 50 senatori democratici e repubblicani chiedono di respingere l’utilizzo «protezionista» delle indicazioni geografiche, in particolare dei formaggi. L’iniziativa ha l’obiettivo di influenzare il negoziato commerciale in corso tra Usa e Ue e la tesi è la stessa propugnata dal «Consorzio per la tutela dei nomi generici»
: l’Europa non può «usurpare» denominazioni «divenute popolari» grazie ai mar chi industriali Usa e, in ultima analisi, grazie agli emigrati italiani e greci che hanno portato oltreoceano i «loro» prodotti tipici, dall’Asiago alla feta. «Nessun paese ha il diritto di possedere nomi generici di alimenti a loro uso esclusivo», sintetizza il presidente della federazione nazionale dei produttori di latte Jim Mulhern, che definisce il sistema delle DOP «un’oltraggiosa barriera protezionistica» e si appella alla «libertà dei consumatori di scegliere».
